In case if you dont know I LOVE the Professor Layton series. It is charming flicker light in this dark age of gaming. It is one of the better recent Nintendo series and prehaps the best DS orginated series. It has mystery, english charm, likeable characters, good storyline and great soundtrack. It has it all
Sadly everything must end and so must the Layton series too. Arzan Legacy is the last chapter in the Professor Layton series (for now that is). Is it a worthy grande finale? The answer is yes and no.
The story begins when Layton and his companions are invited by professor Sycamore (no NOT that professor Sycamore). Sycamore claims he has found a "living mummy" of sorts. This living mummy is revealed to be the messenger of Arzan, a highly civilized legacy that disappeared long time ago. But Layton and his group arent the only ones who are interested in the girl. There is an evil organisation named Targent who wants to get the girl as well. Layton and co has to search for the five Arzan eggs before Targent finds the eggs. But everyone in this game has secrets most notably Laytons new companion Sycamore as well Layton himself
Gameplaywise this game is prehaps the best Layton game. There are puzzles yes but there is some variation in the gameplay (Like one recapsession (which was one of the best things in Last Specter btw)) The game is slightly more nonlinear than the other Layton games as you can visit the areas in any order you want. I also loved the fact that there was a "travel the world" concept. I kinda disliked the fact that Layton games just had a few different locations under one game (the areas were huge tho so not complaining). The Layton 6 has a few areas but they all are scattered in the world. Each area feels different. A thing I loved in this game was how the areas could be visited again and some new stuff would happen. I still havent done them all
As for story it has everything. Acient civiliations whose legacy has been left . A mysterious girl who seems to be the last of Arzan (the civilisation in question). An evil organisation who tries to get the said legacy. Somewhat shocking revelations of our favorite characters as well the new ones. Yet for me the story didnt feel that Laytonish. It felt too grand and RPGish (as it had the collect the magic gems plot as well). It still was quite decent story. Also like I read in one comment the game felt like "the main story was like 4 hours long while it had a lot of sidequests" so I think that is one reason why the story wasnt as good as in say Lost future (which is my favorite Layton BTW)
The graphics and music are good as usual. Nothing else to say here
So overall I'd give this game eight tophats out of ten. This game has a great concept and gameplay and I liked the new characters. At the same time it feelskinda "non Laytonish" and way too epic. Kinda ironic considering how this game slightly is a game I wished the series would have
