Today's entry is the darkest of all the Goosebumps books!
9. Welcome To Dead House
This book was the very first Goosebumps book and the darkest, by far. Amanda and her family move to a new town named Dark Falls (See, dark!). This town is draped in shadows, cloudy most of the time, and filled with trees that cast shadows over the lawns. The streetlights do not work at night, which leaves the streets pitch black. Amanda immediately feels unsafe in her new house and sees a little boy in the upper part of the house before he disappears. Plus, the house makes so many strange noises.
The local kids all act strange. They seems to stick to the shade and avoid the sunlight. Are they vampires? No, not quite! It turns out that a chemical spill happened a long time ago in this town and the residents are dead. Their bodies still move as long as they do not have light shine on them and they also have to feed on fresh blood every year. That is where the Dead House comes in. The residents place the Dead House for sale every year to attract a new family there so they can feed on them. Amanda and her brother eventually encounter all the children that died in their house and escape to a graveyard. There, they find the gravestones of all their new friends. One boy, Ray, tries to stop them from finding out more but Amanda and her brother shine a light on his face. His face melts off. Armed with this knowledge, Amanda and her family eventually expose all the resident to sunlight and flee the town. However, before they leave they notice a new family showing up in town and realize that some residents may have survived! The family flees town without even warning the new family! Whoops!
Oh, and the family's dog dies. He gets eaten by the residents since dogs always bark at the dead. They have to always die first.
This book remains the darkest Goosebumps book and it will always be in my Top Ten!
