Well, it was bound to happen. Today's entry is a Goosebumps book about ghosts! The author wrote a few stories about ghosts and usually these book were among his best works. This is my favorite ghost story in the Goosebumps series. I'm talking about Ghost Beach!

Wow, a cover that is actually scary. Look at that! That ghost looks real and with the graveyard and the full moon overlooking the beach. This is just an excellent cover. This cover actually fits the story too.
This book takes place in a remote locale near a beach. Jerry and Terri are sent to visit their old relatives over the summer. Right away this makes for a unique experience. This location is far removed from the outside world. Nobody to run to if something happens. Jerry and Terri have some eccentric relatives, but they are nice enough. Soon though the kids start to notice some weird myths surrounding the beach and the cave along the shore. The siblings find a skeleton in the woods that used to be a dog! They meet other kids who tell them that the ghost ate the dog because dogs can sense ghosts. Yep, another story with dog killing. The kids tell Jerry and Terri that the ghost lives in the mysterious cave by the beach and that at night you can hear whistling and sometimes you may even see a light coming from the cave. This is actually pretty effective. I love the spooky atmosphere in the story. Jerry waits until nightfall and sees a weird light coming from the cave entrance!
Jerry decides to tell his elderly relatives about the local kids and their strange stories. The elderly couple exchange suspicious glances before telling the kids that the local children are just trying to scare them. Jerry asks about weird light coming from the cave and once again the elderly relatives act suspicious. They tell Jerry that the light is the Northern Lights. Yeah. Northern Lights on a beach in the summer coming from a cave. Man, they must think kids are stupid! Jerry does not believe this and decides to check out the cave with Terri. They sneak out at night and go into the cave. There they meet a dog and a strange man who takes them deeper into the cave. The siblings are terrified and it looks like the man has been living in the cave his whole life. The "ghost" explains that he is actually human and that the cave is a sanctuary which protects him from the real ghosts: the local children! Holy crap. He explains how the kids came from long ago and froze to death during a horrible winter and have haunted the beach since. Finally, the cave hermit tells them to search the graveyard in the woods if they do not believe him. The siblings leave to go search the woods.
Sure enough, the graveyard has the gravestones of the local kids and two fresh graves with Jerry's name and Terri's name. The local kids show up and explain that those graves belong to their ancestors and that the ghost is trying to trick them. They want Jerry and Terri to help trap the ghost in the cave by dropping boulders over the entrance, which would trap him in there because it is a sanctuary. Jerry and Terri are confused on who to believe but they eventually lead the local kids to the cave and the hermit and dog chase the kids into the cave. The local kids reveal their true forms as ghosts and talk about wanting to play with Jerry and Terri forever. Jerry and Terri flee the cave as a storm causes rocks to fall and trap the ghost kids in the sanctuary forever along with the dog and the hermit. Man, that hermit got screwed. He told the truth and then get trapped and most likely dies. The siblings run home to their relatives, who are relieved to see them. They all settle down, but then the hermit's dog shows up. He survived! The dog that is. Not the hermit. He is still dead. The dog starts barking at the elderly relatives. Uh oh. The relatives talk about how everything was going perfectly until the dog had to ruin it and reveal that they were ghosts too! The story end with the implication that the ghostly relatives eat the siblings and the dog. WOW!
This story was great! Twists, caves, spooky woods and graveyards. This book actually had some suspense and mystery. I just loved it. The dark ending was great. Now stay tuned for the best of the best coming soon. These first five books I covered where all great, but they are nothing compared to the books in my top five! Yes, there will be Werewolves!
