So i was reading to my history test (or trying to) while I realised something. Something rather sad and unfortunate

My realization is that Antasma probably won't return

Why did i realize this. there is one big reason. First of all out of all the non Bowser main antagonists the series has had (not counting subfranchises like Wario land or DKC also I am not counting Wario or DK here fyi) only two (fawful and king boo) have appeared in more than one game (arguably four, if the japan exclusive sequel for Smb 2 and Tatangas minor role in ML2 is counted). And the reasons why those two returned is simple: Fawful is/was a fanfavorite (king Boo as well, to an lesser extenct) and King Boo was simply remade into Bowser's henchman.

As for Antasma, I see his chances returning are rather low considering that he is a RPG originated villain (and I think we all know the RPG neglect) and that he isn't exactly a fanfavorite. Even if he was, let me remind you that Dimentio (one of the more popular RPG villains) has only made one apperance

I still hope Tas to return, but at current point I think its just wishful thinking (or should I say vishful...if you know what I mean huehuehue)

Me and Falcon Boy were just talking about the chances of Antasma returning. He found some unused sprite of Antasma so we got excited. I say he still has a chance of returning, but good points.

It is a shot in the dark at this point, but we still have a shot.

Hope Antasma did not make you fail.

Well, Fawful was the exception to the general rule, so you may be right that he will not return. I hope he does. Dimentio had a more definite end than Antasma.

I would argue he has a bit more chance being a M&L character to return than a PM one, Fawful returned, the Shroobs also returned in BIS.

You have to also look at the reason why he was shafted, IIRC developpers said they felt he was "too weak" and so was getting overshadowed by Bowser, them shafting Antasma away could either mean ditching him or simply "fix" him so next game he is an actual powerful villain which wouldn't be overshadowed.

Also look at the villains final quotes, they tend to foreshadow things:

Fawful hinted about wanting to go solo in SSS, in BiS he's the main villain.

Elder Shroob Princess mentioned how the shroobs will survive, in BiS they are alive through frozen in Bowser's castle.

Antasma's last words were about how he wanted to take his vengeance on Bowser and how he had "changed" which possibly hint a return where he would try to do this and possibly some form of character developpement (the "fixing" that the developpers would do)

I say he has a chance

The Shroobs returned mostly as a cameo battle. Fawful started as a cameo that hinted at a return in PIT. My original theory would be that Antasma returns in a small role in the next game and hints as building his power before a full return.

Then again, he could just return right away since he already hinted at his return by swearing revenge. I hope so. I like his chances compared to guys like Dimentio, who had a more definite death, or guys like Bleck since he had a true ending to his story.

There is also no mention they put Antasma down for good, there is mention how he was defeated and how Bowser blamed his defeat on him or Dreambert wanting to return him to the dream world.

But his "death" is a bit iffy (specially that he exploded in the tutorial, yet came back fine later)

As for that animation being used for a transformation... I suppose that's possible, but the way Antasma's inflating looks as if it's an alternate animation for his presumed death, which is further supported by him looking worn out at the beginning.

Possibly through the red eyes seem to imply it could be something else (Antasma has the red eyes when he is charging at you)

I also forgot to mention that Antasma has the same "death explosion" as Bowser who clearly survived.

True. In fact, now that I think about it, it's also possible that this unused animation was either intended for the Mt. Pajamamaja cutscene, or his pre-battle transformation after he defeated Dreambert and was getting ready to face Mario.

Also, Antasma does not seem like a villain who would be defeated by his physical body exploding. He seems like a villain who needs to be sealed or erased in some manner, such as an exorcism. He was sealed once, after all. It would make little sense for him to just explode and die.

That sprite was likely removed to make room for Bowser and his battle. Antasma seems to be tired so it would make sense to be at the end. The abrupt ending and final battle support this in a way.

Idk, but i like the idea that this animation was supposed to be Antasma taking a "Final boss form" but since they changed for Bowser, the animation got dumied out and the Final boss form wasn't either drawn or just plain got deleted in favor of Dreamy Bowser's sprites.

Dreamy Bowser's sprite is so plain too. Way too much like Sticker Star.

I believe the red eyes means that he was about to ascend to a higher and more powerful form or else he would have blue eyes, similar to Bleck and others when defeated.

In all seriousness though, I would really enjoy it. Most villains came back, with the exception of Cackletta. The Shroobs, Elder Princess and Princess Shroob ((frozen in background)), Fawful, and Popple. Popple's an antihero and shouldn't really count but I'm popping him in anyways. *canned laughter*

Also, like was stated before, it's more likely for M&L villains to return than PM. If I recall correctly, no PM villains, with the exception of Bowser and other platformer/kart/party characters, returned.

Mario and Luigi series definitely has the higher chances of a return or at least a cameo. Paper Mario is separate each game in many ways, with cameos used sparingly.

Oh, and one Shroob actually was unfrozen and in Fawful's Theater. You can talk to him, but he says nothing. He is toward the back of the theater in one of the seats. Apparently the Shroobs are big fans of Fawful.
