So this is something that has been on my mind for a while. You know how in Mario we almost always have Bowser asthe main villain? Well I realized that other (Nintendo) plattformers don't spam the main villains in the same way.
For instance in Donkey Kong king K Rool only appeared in the first four games as the main villain and then dissapeared. (I know that he has cameod in sereval games). Something similar happened in the Wario land and Densetsu no Stafy series as well with their respective antagonists (captain Syrup and Ogura respectively) (well at least Capt. Syrup reappeared in wario land shake it while Ogura got a proper closure). In Kirby tjere has been new villains while king dedede is a comic relief.
I wonder why in Mario series they keep using the same villain while other plattformers change their main villain. Granted only DeDeDe and K Rool are iconic (and from known series) but still
Zelda too, sometime it's Ganon, sometime it's a new antagonist (Vaati, Ghirahim, Yuga) & sometime it's a new antagonist which is hijacked by ganon.
I don't know, the spin-off seem exempt of that (with the exeption of Yoshi's island & recent RPG), old games had different antagonists (Wart, Tatanga, Wario, Millenium star) but now it's seem that only Bowser is allowed, worse as mentioned above he is slowing creeping into the spin-offs as well (Sticker Star, Dream Team, Yoshi's new island)
But it was surprising, there was no reference to him or other mario character, i think it added to the charm, it felt less like a generic mario adventure with a luigi's skin and more like it's own unique adventure.
CT was a good first step but i alway feel that Nintendo is trying to play safe by sticking to the "main cast".
Don't seem to happen, even with CT, there is still the new Puzzle & Dragons whose choices clearly scream "generic & re-used assets" & Mario Party 10, oh ! forgive me, Bowser Party 10.
Bet Bowser will be the final boss of the RPG from now
If it happens I probably loose my interestto the Mario RPGs tbh...one of the best things in them were the unique villains....I even would love king Boo to return
I'm sceptic, for one i think CT might have a chance to have rather unique characters but also i can't help but feel that now Final boss Bowser & the "generic cast" are gonna be a staple of spin-off & RPG.
The original characters were definitely something that helped the RPG to be apart, the fact Miyamoto wanted them gone in Sticker Star clearly show how Nintendo hate them and only want the "generic cast" we see now.
For instance in Donkey Kong king K Rool only appeared in the first four games as the main villain and then dissapeared.
Not really. In addition to the first three Country titles, along with the Land series and 64, K. Rool was also the main villain in King of Swing and Jungle Climber. Not counting the cancelled Diddy Kong Pilot (which has a ROM dump floating around the 'net), K. Rool appeared in two spin-offs; Barrel Blast and Super Sluggers. It wasn't until after the latter game that he was never seen again, save for yet another pathetically minor trophy cameo in Smash 4.
Well, King K. Rool even appeared in different forms in the Donkey Kong Country games. He never becomes stale because of this aspect. He came back as Captain K. Rool after his defeat as King. K Rool and then changed yet again for the 3rd game before going back to King. The Kremlings changed accordingly. This kept everything very fresh.
Ridley is like Bowser I noticed. He keeps coming back, rules a lava area, is sometimes clones or has his image used, and also appears as a mecha.
Metroid still has other villains like Metroid Prime/Dark Samus, Emperor Ing, Mother Brain, X parasites. So every series other than Mario from Nintendo's Big 5 switches the villains around.
The only non mentoined series from the big five (Pokémon) doesn't even have a main one. Each time its a new area, new evil organisation etc. Same goes for Fire Emblem as well.
Yeah I know about those. Wasn't DKL remakes of the original DKC tho? (Thats why I didnt count it)
I miss him a lot right now. He really needed to appear in Returns to establish his role among the new fans of the series, but instead they decided to leave him out.
I miss so many Kongs, animals buddies, and Kremlings as well. Really King K. Rool is just the tip of the iceberg.
