It depend.
Sunshine could have Shadow Mario has an original villain (granted Bowser jr at the time was a new one), no need to add Bowser at the end.
SMG is 50/50, on one part Bowser's do fit since he is a conqueror but in another part, you could have a villain with ties with Rosalina (her brother ?)
NSMB is basically a spiritual sequel of SMB, so Bowser fit.
NSMBWII: Same as above.
NSMB2: Could have Wario since it's gold themed.
SM3DW: same as SMG, Bowser fit but being located in another kingdom, there could have been an anthesis of the Sprixies and the Kingdom's own "Bowser" (kinda like how Cackletta was the Beanbean Kingdom's "Bowser" or Wart the Subcon "Bowser)
So basically, here Bowser is still basically the main antagonist of the whole series, but he doesn't feel as overused.
Mario has that old timey cartoon feel to me. Part of that is the formulaic way the hero clashes with his archrival, so I think having a consistent villain works here.
I'm surprised Bowser's never tried tying Peach to train tracks.
oh reality, it's not for me and it makes me laugh oh, fantasy world and disney girls i'm coming back
I meant the old Western Animations, like Popeye or Mickey Mouse or Dudley Do-Right.
And I disagree with Wario as the villain for New Super Mario Bros 2. I don't see him as a bad guy, he just does his own thing. He wouldn't go after petty coins, he likes the big treasure.

True, Mario remind me a lot of those Popeye cartoons, that's why i unlike some doesn't mind the lack of story, it should be simple but done in a way it doesn't ruin the fun (not rehashed, little twists to the "villain kidnap girl, go rescue her" classic plot, etc...)
Through Luigi's make me think of a cross between Mr bean & Courage the cowardly dog for some reason.

Actually i didn't see him as an antagonist when i mentionned it there.
I kinda imagined him being more the greddy bastard who is there because of the coins.
The only "Antagonistic" thing he would do there is being greddy, ruining the mushroom kingdom by stealing it's money and not liking Mario much.

Well, Paper Jam is using Dream team style, so from a technical point of view Antasma is the RPG villain which has the highest chance of showing up since Alpha Dream has already the sprites to work with and the fact Antasma is the most recent RPG villain.
Not sure what would be his role through (probably a simple cameo like Fawful in PiT but who know ?)
