Nintendo confirmed New Island takes place in between YI and YIDS.

Thanks for the correction. Didn't play Yoshi's New Island, so I kind of missed how the story works there.

Obviously now I'll just switch the games around in the timeline.

I always imagined That the order was -

Yoshi Games -> PiT's Past -> DK Arcade Games -> Mario Bros. Arcade -> The other Mario Games

Other than that the order is pretty much their release date.

I don't know if there is a plausible timeline for the Mario games even excluding the spin-offs. The series wasn't really built for it.

I think any attempt to construct the Mario timeline will be futile, ridiculous, and maybe a waste of time.

I don't really have a "ideal" timeline for the Mario series, though I don't really like the "Mario and Luigi are plumbers from Brooklyn" backstory and generally tend to stick with the backstory provided by Yoshi's Island.
