Today’s villain is the first female villain to appear in Courage the Cowardly Dog. She is the Queen of The Black Puddle!

This “woman” is a complete monster. She appears from all forms of liquid. Courage first notices a puddle outside of the house after a huge thunder storm. The puddle seems deep and dark. Courage looks into a puddle and sees the Queen staring back at him!

Interestingly, she is not after Courage and shows no interest in the dog. She wants Eustace. The Queen of The Black Puddle is basically a Succubus that entices men to follow her into her murky puddle. She first appears to Eustace as she rises from his coffee and sprays him with a pheromone that attracts him to her. Courage noticed this and freaks out. The house roof is also leaking so Eustace tries to fix it when the Queen appears to him as a droplet of water. She whispers “Eustace” in a very enticing manner. Later that night the Queen materializes in the bathtub as Eustace is bathing (in his underwear!) and requests that Eustace follows her to the depths. Courage and Murial find Eustace with his head stuck in the drain.
They put Eustace to bed and all fall asleep. Then, in what has to be one of the most frightening moments from the series, we see the Queen rise silently from the Black Puddle outside of the farm house. She moves graceful through the shadows and enters the house. She ascends the stairs and emerges from the shadows outside of the bedroom door.

She tries to open the door, but it is locked. She then turns into a puddle of water and enters the room. She takes Eustace from his bed and takes him lovingly to the Black Puddle. She descends into the murky water and flashes Courage a look as if she dares him to follow.
The next morning Muriel is heartbroken of the loss of Eustace, believing that her ran away. A puddle of tears surrounds Muriel. Courage, feeling bad for Muriel, puts on some scuba gear and ventures into the Black Puddle to retrieve Eustace. Under the water Courage notices that the space is HUGE! Bones litter the landscape and all of the skeletons seem to be wearing a sea shell necklace. Courage spots the Queen’s castle and finds her dancing seductively for Eustace. She then places a sea shell necklace on Eustace and transforms into a hideous monster with a dislocated jaw filled with razor sharp teeth! Wow! I did not see that coming!

Courage grabs Eustace and flees. He notices that the hole that he originally found at the start of the episode is starting to evaporate and swims quickly to it while the Queen easily chases after them while roaring! The hole closes up as Courage gets there and his escape route is closed. He looks around frantically and notices a new puddle of water. The new puddle is none other than Muriel tears! Courage, with Eustace in tow, emerges from the puddle and immediately uses a hair dryer to evaporate the puddle right before the Queen emerges. She is trapped and all ends happily. Or does it? That night as Courage is bathing a dog version of the Queen appears to him and winks!

The Queen of the Black Puddle is scary for so many reasons. First, she can appear from any form of water, even tears, drinks, or rain! As somebody named Rain, this scares me! Secondly, she has killed so many men before this episode. Diving into the puddle allows the viewer to see the thousands of skeletons of her previous victims. In fact, Courage only escape from her in her debut episode which means that she is still out there until later seasons.
