Finally, the top 3! Today’s villain is a departure from most villains. This villain is almost never on any list, but he remains one of my personal favorites. He is smart, calculating, and very unhappy. I am talking about Dr. Zalost!

Dr. Zalost only appears in one episode, but the episode is the season 2 finale and the first episode to have two parts. Dr. Zalost is an unhappy scientist who resides in his mobile tower named after himself. He has a GIANT RAT minion.

One dark day in Nowhere, Dr. Zalost attacks the town with his unhappy cannons which shoot cannon balls that make victims depressed. All of the residents are struck with the canon balls. They instantly become depressed and unable to go on with their lives. WOW. That is a pretty dark theme for a children’s show. This episode is more emotional than scary and I think that is why I love Dr. Zalost so much.

The whole episode, The Tower of Dr. Zalost, has a dark and depressing feeling. The sky is dark and bleak. The music is haunting and my personal favorite. The whole depression angle is played perfectly.

Courage avoids the unhappy canon balls and eventually infiltrates the tower. He uses Muriel’s Happy Plums to turn the minion rat into a baby. He confronts Dr. Zalost and manages to destroy the tower in one of the best scenes. Dr. Zalost emerges from the destruction and enters the farm house, but is distracted by a bowl of Happy Plums. He eats them and they cure his depression.

Dr. Zalost goes on to live happily with his rat minion. That’s right! A villain is actually redeemed! That is one of my favorite parts. I expected him to be defeated, but instead he is cured of depression and redeemed! That puts him in the top 3 best villains.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s villain. He is impossible to redeem.
Now go have a happy snack!
