I voted for Game Freak; because it's the most memorable company for me out of those listed. I love the Pokémon games and I have tried out some of Game Freak's other games; Drill Dozer and Pulseman which are both great games. I also love HarmoKnight.

But AlphaDream would come second.

I love AlphaDream because I feel that they put lots of love into their games. Koto Battle was a Game Boy Color title, but the graphics are full of colour and it has a great selection of music, and I feel AlphaDream took great measures to make the game enjoyable.

AlphaDream are very good at creating charming characters, great scenario (overarching plot and story and the small details within them) and unique battle systems or at least battle systems in which you don't just use an attack and wait. I also like the humour they add to their games, which Tomato Adventure and I think Koto Battle (IIRC) have too.

This is the hero of Koto Battle and his golden dog Kanae, I think they have a very great design.



Koto Battle's battle system is easy to get into, but I hear it can be surprisingly complex if you want it to be. You fight monsters using cards. You have cards of different elements (written in kanji but the game also tells you the elements in hiragana thankfully). These cards can be used to summon a monster near the top, center or bottom section of the screen, to give one of your monsters an item that could have a positive or negative effect like alter its attack and/or attack range, or use magic; such as an attack that doesn't require a monster.

The monsters will fight the enemy monster in front of it (or depending on its attack, it could also hit the monsters surrounding it), and the objective is to defeat all the monsters (and the Koto Battler who stands behind his/her monsters if you are against another person) without using up all of your cards.

A nice feature is that the cards you previously used are added into a "history" (りれき) section; and if you have cards in it of a certain combination you can use another magic spell to aid you during the battle.

The monsters in Koto Battle have great designs, I love them.

Tomato Adventure had a special battle system too. It is an "action-command" role-playing game. Attacks are performed with toy-like weapons called Gimmicks. The four playable heroes DeMille, Aresa, Sofubī, Rereku have their own set of Gimmicks and different Gimmicks are split into four categories; Timing, Multiple-Hit, Heart-Pounding and Speed. When you use a Gimmick, you have to finish a very short minigame that involves certain input; the sort of minigame depending on the category.

For example, for DeMille's Gear Yo-Yo you have to press A when a cursor is within a red bar, and if you are successful, your attacks will do more damage (like how the Mario & Luigi series has Bros. attacks which deal more damage if you do them correctly). A nice thing about Tomato Adventure is that you can increase the difficulty (level) of a Gimmick up to level 7 so that doing them successfully will deal more damage than if the Gimmick was set at a lower level.

I also like Intelligent Systems. I have not played Fire Emblem, Advance Wars. But the company has titles I can relate to, in particular Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) which is a lovely game with great character development, and other titles such as WarioWare: DIY, Spotto (known as Bird & Bombs in Europe), Panel de Pon and Card Hero. I think that Intelligent Systems have a highly impressive portfolio.

I love much of HAL Laboratory's works, I am a moderate fan of Kirby who has tried most of the games and really loved Kirby: Triple Deluxe; which was nice to pick up and play and had a great selection of music. I also love Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee; and I think that Box Boy! looks good although I haven't tried it yet.

It is not arguably not a subsidiary, but the company Indieszero appeals to me. I loved the recent NES Remix series. I have played a few of their other games too - Electroplankton, Sennen Kazoku, Sakura Momoko no Ukiuki Carnival (the latter I tried when I didn't have as much knowledge of Japanese but I may be able to continue it now). I would like to play Sutte Hakkun because I hear it is good, and I love the protagonist Hakkun, I think he's cute.



I'm not an expert on this, but I'm afraid I don't know if some of the companies on your list are subsidiaries.

I read that for a company to be classed as a subsidiary it has to be partly or fully owned by the parent company. I am not sure if this is a case for Chunsoft, Game Freak, skip and Next Level Games, but they are definitely business partners; they share mutual recognition for each other, maybe have contracts (like with Game Freak). This Wikipedia template tells us ownership percentages and where Nintendo developers fall, but I'm not sure of the sources/when they applied.

So what constitutes "second party" may be more subjective than I thought.

According to this (a developer breakdown for the staff credits), they developed part of Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru with Nintendo, but were not the main developers. It appears that Nintendo worked on the story and overall coordination. Intelligent Systems worked on the program. I get the impression that programming is something that IS excels in.

Another Game Boy title Trade & Battle: Card Hero was co-developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems as well, however, apparently Intelligent Systems were more involved in that title, responsible for character design, animation and had a role in direction of the game and not just the program. Interestingly, Card Hero features that mock company "Nantendo" from Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru.

As for Panel de Pon, I'll have to look into that more. IS designed the characters.

No, I would consider them third party personally. Level-5 have developed a lot of games for Nintendo DS or 3DS, some published by Nintendo in certain regions; so they are partners but not subsidiaries because Nintendo doesn't own them/part of them.

Retro. DKCR, Metroid Prime, they're great. They revived two series and, I think, made them better. HAL for EB and Kirby as a close second, and Camelot for Golden Sun as a 3rd. Haven't heard much about the others.

Alphadream is one of my personal faves so good taste

Next Level is moving up the list.

Intelligent Systems is remaining steady for now, but AlphaDream should not be judged too hard just yet. Even if Jam sucks as long as the Mario and Luigi series continues in normal fashion they should be okay.

I'd like AD to also focus on their other franchises rather than just M&L.

They have a few games which should be localized (Tomato Adventure, Koto battle...)

I never played tomato adventure before, but it looks really cool.

Mario and Luigi never had a bad game, either. Some say PIT was awful, and I did not like the end of Dream Team, but the series has produced some of the best games on their respective handhelds starting with the GBA.

I thought PIT was a great game. I actually liked the comedic aspect in PIT more than any other in the series. It also had some of the most interesting areas.

I think we have to wait until the next real game. Mario and Luigi will have to stay in limbo until then I suppose, unless Jam blows us all away.

True, it missed some opportunities, but so did every other game in the series.

Shroobs were fun. I liked their various rankings and military might, along with their factories and creatures like Yoob and Swiggler.

AlphaDream is so creative. That is why I do not want to see them lose all of that in the Jam process.

When peoples start saying a game is perfect then it mean it's overrated.

But no, the game doesn't bother me. It's just that i fear it's fanbase is in the Early stages of becoming a FNAF/MLP one :/
