Hello people on the boards today I wanted to talk about a rather popular japanese 3ds game series that soon makes it debut in the statesides. I will talk about Level 5 newest (I think??) IP Yokai Watch. While in japan its megapopular having two games (third coming up) and some going so far as saying its popularity rivals that of Pokemons, the franchise will first come to the west at fall 2015. So I figured why not to talk about Yokai watch, as I am pretty excited for this game.

The Yokai Watch series story is basically about a kid ((the playable characters players can chose between playing as a boy named Nate or a girl named Katie))who finds a weird capsule machine near a cherry tree. The kid summons a Yokai named wishper who gives the player the Yokai watch. The watch gives the player ability to see Yokais that are causing harm. With the help of Whisper and the cat Yokai Jibanyan, the player goes to befriend friendly yokais and fight against evil and mischievous yokais who cause trouble in the town of Springdale.
In gameplay sense Yokai watch is kinda similar to Pokemon but with a twist. Players can befriend Yokai by giving them food. Once the yokai is befriended they give the player their Yokai Medal which gives ability to summon that Yokai at will. You can summon your befriended yokais to battle against evil yokais in turnbased 3 vs 3 battles. Like in Pokemon, the yokais in yokai watch can evolve to stronger forms by reaching a certain level or by fusing with other yokais. There also are extremely rare yokai, which could be compared with legendary and mythical Pokemon. The town of Springdale (the setting where the game is set in) is huge and open world giving the player ability to explore. You can do side quests to people in the town.
So what do you think? I am looking forward to the game .While Pokemon isnt the only (and not even the first) one in the "capture the monsters and battle with them" its by far the most popular in the genre. Many other games have tried to imitate its success but most of them have failed. Yokai watch however is a smash hit in Japan. While it is similar to Pokemon it has its own interesting identity. As someone who is interested in japanese mythos and yokais seeing a game having kinda modernised twist on yokais (most of the yokais in YW are purely original creations and not based on yokais in actual japanese mythos) . The fact its made by Level 5 helps as well. So all in all I am looking forward Yokai Watch and its colorful world of wacky creatures. Its a shame that besides Code Name STEAM Yokai Watch is the only 3DS 2015 release I am excited about -.-. But oh well, maybe we get something else as well
