This does not involve all games, but did you ever notice that Super Mario RPG and Thousand-Year Door have blue stars related to a chapter with pirates, ships, and captains that starts as bosses and then become allies?

All final areas in M&L are initially inacessible, so you need a special character or item to get in.
SSS - The bird on Hoo hoo valley to fly you on the flying castle. PiT - The Cobalt star to destroy the forcefield of Shroob Castle. BiS - The Miracle cure to destroy the Dark Star's obstacles on Peach's Castle. DT - The Zeekeeper to break Neo Bowser's Castle shield and force it to land on the island.

Some villains ressemble each other in term of stereotypes with one thing opposite
The shroobs are aliens who doesn't redeem themsleve - the X-nauts are aliens who do redeem themselve.
Fawful is a laughably evil character who nearly destroy the world with the Dark Star and is mechanical based - Dimentio is a laughably evil character who nearly destroy the world with the Chaos heart and is magic based.
Count Bleck is based on Dracula and is a tragic villain who get betrayed but keep his compagnons - Antasma is based on Dracula and is hinted to be a tragic villain who get betrayed and is left alone.

In the ML Games from pit onwards theres at least one recurring character from the previous entry. PiT had the Fawful cameo,BiS had not only Fawful as the main villain but also other recurring characters like Toadbert and the shroob cameo. Finally dream team had the return of Starlow,Elite Trio,Broque Monsieur, Broque Madame,Broggy;Popple as well the Kylie Koopa cameo
Also more often than not the mcguffin of the game is wishrelated (this is the case of SMRPG,sss and dt at least..maybe some other tooi forgot
All the M&L RPGs have Jump and Hammer as the basic skills and some form of combo attacks. All the M&L RPGs from PiT onwards have a gimmick.

All the M&L RPGs have a boss that's disproportionately (do I spell this allright? xD I'm Dutch) diffcult and/or annoying. For SSS, it was Trunkle. For PiT, it was Sunnycide (at least for me) and Bowser+Baby Bowser teamup (ironically enough never had trouble with Princess Shroob or the Elder Princess Shroob), for BiS it was the Fawful Express and DT had a fair share of them for me; Big Massif and his lackeys, the Elite Trio and (UUUGHH) the Somnom Woods guardian robot boss.

All the M&L RPGs somehow reference the earlier games. All the M&L RPGs have Bowser becoming more and more dangerous on a sliding scale. I'm curious how it'll end up in Paper Jam (tbh I hope he'll become an anti hero sorta and help Mario out then backstab and try to destroy him). All the M&L RPGs have some unusual situation (as in, something that almost never happened before in a Mario game) happening. In SSS, it's Bowser's amnesia, in PiT it's the time travel thing, in BiS it's, well... the Bowser's Inside Story, and in DT it's the weird stuff happening in Luigi's dreams.
