Sociopaths can mimic all of those emotions easily, and are capable of doing nice things for others.
What am I doing? Playing Devil's Advocate here. I hate the theory, but sociopaths are a little misunderstood.
Well, they can, but when it comes to video game characters, it's best to use the least amount of assumptions.
Sociopaths are simply people who don't feel empathy, sympathy, regret, guilt, etc.. Being antisocial (e.g. breaking the law and otherwise violating fundamental societal standards) is a common trait along with sociopathy. That being said, I'm sure Mario feels traits not associated with sociopathy.
Some are more sociopathic than others, kind of like on a spectrum. they are not all the same, but have varying degrees of disorder. Mario is the least likely to be a sociopath. Wario would be more fitting, and even that is a stretch.

I wouldn't be too surprised that it falls along a spectrum. But yeah, I'm glad you understand my definition of "sociopath". I'm not Psychology major, but I did pick a few things from AP Psychology class when I was at high school.
On-topic, how about AlphaDream cut down on tutorials and gyroscope controls?
Everybody always seems interested on sociopaths and seem to focus on them or find them intriguing. Sociopaths are the most boring for me now because they usually become very predictable once you get past the charm and thrill -seeking behavior. There is not much there, unlike the other personality disorders. They have their own interests, but usually have little depth.
That is why this theory popped up and why people still discuss character like Hannibal Lector. People love looking at the dark side of things.

I personally don't like sociopaths because I can't associate with them. It's hard for me to sympathize with them, although their brain has a defect and they can't really do anything about it. "Deeper" meanings is fine in a Mario game, but I never take them seriously. The Mario series just doesn't seem like the best place to start making up crazy things unless you're joking.
I suppose people like the "dark" side because nobody is really perfect, and I bet everyone does have a slight morbid side.
Well, many people like being scared so they watch scary movies. I guess exploring the worst parts of humanity also provides a thrill. I know tons of Psychology majors who analyze people upon meeting them and always try to label them into a category. I hate that stuff. If people look for symptoms then most of the time the situation becomes much like a self-fulfilling prophecy. You are bound to find something wrong if you are looking for it, especially if you are trying to prove your view or justify an agenda.
Dream Team should have made Neo Bowser Castle with my of Antasma's themes in mind, instead of lava. I wanted to see more of those eerie vines.

Well, I loathe the horror genre, so I suppose it fits. Yeah, I'm aware of self-fulfilling prophecy and I really don't like pigeonholing people I never met. If people call you something, you're going to act the part (even though you're not necessarily that something before people call you that).
I like to see Neo Bowser Castle similar to Neo Bowser City because I like those kinds of cute references.
The horror genre is great if done right, but now they all seem like slashers. No more movies like The Thing.
I like the horror genre more in games because the games actually build atmosphere, like in Siren when you have darkness and fog. Turn on the flashlight and you become a target, but walk around in the dark and you might end up lost.
Neo Bowser City was a wonderful course. I thought of it when I saw the name Neo Bowser Castle, but then I was very sad to learn that they were not connected. And the castle sucked.

The ugly parts of the horror genre are all jumpscare here, jumpscare there. Ugh. Just thinking about them makes me sick.
Really? I thought the name similarities wouldn't lead to "just a coincidence", but it apparently think it is. I'd like that kind of fanservice. I really liked Neo Bowser City since it's so refreshing compared to castle after castle (of course, we have a castle, but it's not the ONLY Bowser course this time). Now, hoping for Mario to get something that isn't a circuit and isn't in Mario Kart Arcade GP games.......
Yeah, I do not play the games with too many jump scares. I prefer the atmosphere. I like when it seems like something bad will happen, but nothing does. That is why I prefer Japanese horror game and movies to western horror.
I am sick of Mario Circuits too. Luigi got his mansion, so Mario deserves something.

I think people who are more seasoned with the horror genre, in general, prefer the atmosphere to the jumpscares. Anyone can program jumpscares. Immersion takes much more effort and is a more memorable experience. This is what I conclude from other people's opinions on horror.
Mario does have a beach highway or something in Mario Kart Arcade GP, but it looks a tad circuit-y for my tastes. It's obvious you're racing through a beach, but it's a bit more variety than the typical circuit fare.
You are spot on. I loathe jump scares. They are the cheapest method to scare an audience and once you play the game once it has nothing left, no substance. A creepy atmosphere, on the other hand, can stay with you for a long time. Than is why I prefer Silent Hill over Resident Evil.
Toad has good levels. DK has too many mountains now. I love Daisy's levels. Daisy Cruiser is one of my favorites of all time.

Of course, if you hate jumpscares, you could always play Dream Team, where you'll fall asleep instead! I think Resident Evil is more emphasis on the thrills rather than the creepiness (although I'm not sure since the only thing closest resembling horror that I play is Left 4 Dead 2...).
Too many mountains? Donkey Kong just got a jungle recently. It's only in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart DS where he gets, strangely, a snowy mountain.
Daisy Cruiser is pretty boring for me. :/ I do like most of Toad's courses, though.

Even though he lives in a jungle, his games have m,any diverse areas. He needs some more variety. Just like Bowser needs more than castles and Mario needs more than plain circuits.

And Samus needs more than lava, lava everywhere. Yeah, I know. I do think Bowser and Donkey need more variety, but they still have more variety than poor old Mayro. Even his bro has more variety, which is a haunted mansion.

What could Dream Team have done better? Well, ignoring the obvious (removing the unnecessary gyro controls, cutting down on the number of tutorials):
It could have made the Ultibed part hunt a bit more interesting. It was literally just a bunch of random side quests and small side areas, and the concepts brought up there were never really used to the fullest degree possible. Maybe one or two of them should have been made into proper new locations with new ideas, abilities, etc, like Gwarhar Lagoon in Superstar Saga. The second journey up Mount Pajamaja, and the cavern area at Driftwood Shore are two places that should have made like this.
There should have been an extra giant boss in the Battle Ring. The normal one had Bowser Jr fought after Antasma X, so why not have say, a giant King Boo or Midbus fought after Giant Bowser?
More of a dream feel in general. The Dream World in game is quite interesting, but to be honest... only the bosses you fight there feel like something that wouldn't fit in the 'real' world. Should have been a bit more abstract in terms of feel.

Have to admit, I'm kind of conflicted about how Antasma was treated in Dream Team. On the one hand, he was an interesting character who's potential never really got explored due to Bowser taking a larger role in the story and being more of an active villain.
On the other hand, I did really like how Bowser was actually competent in this one. How unlike in the past games, he didn't 'lose' to the new guy, and showed that he could easily take over from a one shot villain if needed. It made up for his treatment in the Paper Mario series and the first two Mario & Luigi games.
Maybe it would have been best if he simply wasn't in Dream Team at all. And if his future 'hijacked by Ganon' type role was in a game where the new villain was kind of uninteresting, like the Shroobs.

I think they shouldn't have killed him but make him a multi-games villain like Fawful, so it keep the twist but it allow Tas's to get some character developpement in process.
I feel there is alot of things they could have added, his backstory and motiviations seemed almost to hint some tragicness at time. (a bat that is corrupted by nightmares until all that is left is a power-hungy Nightmare monster)
Also since Paper Jam is a crossover, there was the potential to give him some connection with Nastasia from SPM (remember that she was once a bat according to Carson), idk maybe it could have been revealed that he was an ancestor of whatever clan Nastasia is from.
Note that i did like how they treated Bowser there, just they shouldn't have wasted a villain to make him look good.
Well, given how we thought Fawful died in Superstar Saga, there's always the hope that Antasma may return. If the former can go from being a ghost in Superstar Saga's final battle to the main villain in Bowser's Inside Story, then Antasma can go from being 'dead' in Dream Team to a main villain in another game.
