Fair warning, this thread will contain spoilers. And considering this game isn't even out in North America, most people may want to stay away from this for a while.
Now that most people are gone, I would like to say that this game could have been perfect. Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi had so many things that were just not in any of the other games of the series. But they didn't include much of that. No characters exclusive to either series, aside from a few of the obvious. (Starlow, Paper Mario, Paper Bowser, etc.) They could have had Dimentio, or Fawful, Cackletta, Shadow Queen, Count Bleck, Tipi, or any combination of characters. But instead, we get Bowser and Bowser.

Antasma do show up...in the art of a Bowser's amiibo card
But eh, i'm more bothered by the rehashing of assets and the ridiculously high amount of Toads NPC (really even without OCs, they could have added Piantas, Lumas, Toadsworth, etc...) than the presence of OCs tbh.
Writing and music are still top notch.

I wouldn't call if "cheap" fanservice. A crossover like this comes around once in a lifetime and likely won't ever come again. Taking advantage of the unique characters of each series shouldn't be too much to ask.

Most of these characters never reappear in non-crossovers. Why would they suddenly reappear now?

They could have kept staples like Merlon, Kammy, and at least reference others like Fawful (since he's been in as many M&L games as Starlow, he could at least have been the X boss in the battle ring) Antasma (His "death" was pathetic and Paper Jam proves that animation doesn't mean permanent death since it happened to Kamek and the Koopalings) and the Shroobs that were seen in Bowser's Castle in BIS. Also it could have cameos from partners in the original Paper Mario games (TTYD featured Parakarry and Bow after all).

Out of the whole Mario RPG fanbase, most of us care about the characters they create. Look up fanart of Mario RPGs and you'll find that much of it contains the OCs of the series. You say the people who care are a niche group, well that can't make up less than half of a fanbase that's already niche (you've said yourself that these games mostly appeal to a niche group in the past)
If we are using fan art as some kind of measuring tool then the OCs are even more niche since they have way less fan art than say characters like Bowser, toad, wario, Daisy, etc etc.

I'm specifically referring to fan art based around the RPGs. We're not counting fan art of other games, because those don't necessarily come from fans of the RPG series or people who play them.

a bit disappointing to hear that, but it shouldn't bother me much. I'll still probably like it.
If I were to create a Mario RPG, I'd just use characters from Mario 1, 2, 3, World, and the Galaxy titles. There's enough characters in those titles to work with without making some up.
The story would just be what it usually is to give more time to the settings and environment. The game itself would be 3D, Mario 64 style but otherwise would be similar to Thousand Year Door in terms of gameplay. But instead of partners, you could switch between Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi SPM style (for the shit I give that game, I liked that idea).
oh reality, it's not for me and it makes me laugh oh, fantasy world and disney girls i'm coming back
I'm really enjoying the game, but yeah, it could have been much better. But do you know what's more depressing?
You can see hundreds of points where some originality and new characters and ideas could have been added in, and where the story could have taken a more interesting turn. Like the whole mining operation in Twinsy Tropics that was used to get the rocket engines for Neo Bowser Castle. That could have been the start of all manners of interesting schemes and third party villain involvement... The forest area had a lot of potential too.
I'm also a little disappointed in just what returning characters were chosen here. I mean, it's much better than Sticker Star (they're actually use enemies and bosses from more obscure games in Paper Jam), but still. The Mario platformers alone could have given us a ten times more interesting cast list.
Wario fan, Mario game modder and interested in every Mario RPG you can imagine!
I also run Wario Forums, which is a place to discuss the Wario Land and WarioWare franchises.

This might be an unpopular opinion but.. I feel like Paper Jam is the weakest game for both series. The game is really REALLY repetitive, almost all levels looks alike, the plot isn't THAT interesting and you are usually doing the same battles over and over again.. I had more fun playing Sticker Star tbh..

I'll kill you!!!!
Naw? Just kidding, bro? I know there's a select that do like Sticker Star. (Me not being one of them.) Hell! It's gotta so bad that a user on GameFAQs made a thread about it after the rumor got started and it said "Paper Mario HD: Sticky Scar" lol And I laughed so hard that I almost busted my gut. XD
You're cool in my book?
Been a fan of the Paper Mario series ever since I started playing Super Paper Mario for the Wii... No joke! XD I saw a few ads and commercials about the Paper Mario series. But I didn't start playing them for the story until I played the third game in the series. Ever since then? Many games of 2016 have come and challenge what we consider as story driven games now. UnderTale and recently FNAF's World. I hope that someday I can create my own game based upon the Paper Mario series and pay tribute.

Ehh, personally i feel Paper Jam tried to improve a few things Sticker Star did, so i consider it above it.
I prefear Sticker Star for some reasons 1- An original gameplay and less repetitive. You get a lot of different stickers and the battle system is original. It's kinda too in Paper Jam but you usually do the same attacks over and over. Plus, I've finished both Dream Team and Sticker Star twice so it's getting old.. 2- Sticker Star's soundtrack was more memorable.. (Sorry to the composer of Paper Jam but I liked her work more in Dream Team.) 3- More stuff happens and the pace is GOOD! Each level (well, at least most of them.) have something unique compared to the others Spoilers alert.. In one, you loose all your stickers and need to get them back. In another one, the whole level is a quizz show. Or there's one where you have to collect Boos. Ect, ect. There's more stuff that happens and you want to know what surprises the next level gives you! Paper Jam.. You kinda want at first but after a while.. It's just so boring and repetitive. All theses battles, all this generic overworld.. And the story doesn't save that.. That's too bad because at first, the game is fun. But then, it became really too unpleasant... So yeah that's my opinion about why I prefear Sticker Star than this! Also, I usually look at GameFAQs to see all the people being butthurt about the car system in Mario Party (That I enjoyed. btw.) so I only look at it to laugh but in another way..
