Paper Mario : Legacy of the Koopa – a game idea
Opening:
The story opens at the end of any normal Mario story, as Bowser is dropped in a pit of lava by Mario as he recues Peach. Peach thanks Mario for rescuing her as they hurry out the door of the castle, opened by Toadsworth and a guard toad named AMANI as well as several other toads. As they leave, Amani has a brief conversation with Peach, wishing Bowser would give up on Peach since he always loses. Mario and Peach look back at the lava pool for a few seconds as they leave and the screen re-centers on the pool.
At that moment, Kammy comes into the room, yelling for Bowser, asking if he needs anything. She can't see him, but she sees the open cage and door and sighs to herself. Facing the pool, she says "Your Nastiness, are you in there?" The pool responds with a wistful "glug". Kammy then tells Bowser she'll get him out, and Tries to lift Bowser out with her magic, but he is too heavy. She then yells "Sonny boy! Come and help your King and your Ma!" Though another door holding a stack of books comes KAMEK, as he drops the books and together the two pull Bowser out of the pool, a depressed look on his face as he sits on his throne.
The two try to cheer him, but Bowser starts to worry about his standing as a respectable koopa king because of his constant losses to Mario. Kamek actually thinks it was funny he should mention that, as he was recently given a book on Koopa family history by someone who had hurriedly run past him in the hallway.
He shows Bowser a passage on one of his ancestors known as BARONUS KOOPA, who was supposedly the most feared Koopa King of all time, known throughout the lands as a conqueror, but was sealed away by traitors within his own ranks, inside of a volcano in the koopa kingdom. Only one of his own Bloodline could possibly undo the magic.
The scene skips to a creepy cave surrounded by monstrous statues and Lava. Bowser, Kammy, and Kamek stroll through and Find an eerie door with 7 gems fastened in around a monstrous face. Within the face lies a koopa handprint. Kammy and Kamek try to blast open the door, but don't make a scratch. Bowser tries, and a great rumbling is heard as the door blasts open, sending the gems flying, ad leaving the door wide open as Bowser looks on with a gaping jaw at a pair of Menacing, glowing eyes in the shadows.
PAPER MARIO: Legacy of the Koopa
Prologue: Kingdom Gone
Mario, Luigi and everyone are celebrating Peach's rescue within her castle with a big celebration. Mario is allowed to wander the castle and talk to everyone. Some charachters from previous adventures are at the party such as Professor Frankly, Parakarry, and Merlon.
Mario eventually talks to toadsworth to find where Amani is, and she is gazing out on the porch, wondering if Bowser will ever give up. Amani hates the Bowser and the koopas and half-jokes that maybe they should take over Bowser's kingdom some time instead. Suddenly, a huge rumble hits shakes the castle and troopas and goombas wearing a new symbol have appaeared,c oming down from koopa airships.
Amani joins mario as his first partner as they go and hurry through the attacked castle and give tutorials on basic combat and such in the game.
In the hallway, Mario and Amani run into a Large Hammer Bro wearing sunglasses giving orders to various troops, mentioning what Baronus will do to them if they fail. Amani wonders if he meant bowser, when the hammer bro notices them and fights them as a miniboss. When he loses, he begs for forgiveness as lightning bolts hit him repeatedly until he is out cold.
At that moment, a large, menacing koopa noticably older than Bowser but looking far more threatening, bursts in, berating the hammer bro while blasting him over and over again with his magical staff.
He is soon followed by Bowser and the Magikoopas. Baronus berates Bowser for not being able to do this much when Bowser tells him about Mario always undoing his plans. He asks who Mario is and Bowser meekly points to the plumber standing in front of him.
Baronus, without another word, enters a fight with Mario, whose jumps and hammer attacks are easily blocked by Baronus's magic. He pulls no punches and with his superior stats KO's Mario and Amani in one hit.
Down and out, Baronus tells Bowser to put them with the others, which is an order Bowser relays to Kamek. Quickly, he uses a magic box to shrink the two down and seal them inside.
Previously, Kamek had been preoccupied by an important package he had to send to his daughter, and in a humorous circumstance, gets the two boxes mixed up.
Chapter 1: The School of Hard Knocks
The box is sent to Kam University, the premiere institute of learning for the koopa kingdom. It has a vibrant campus full of shops and friendly NPCs.
Kamek's Daughter, ALKIMI, sudies here and has posters of Rawk Hawk and the Koopa Bros in her dorm. She is shocked to see a toad and mario burst out of the box instead of the money her dad was going to send. Discouraged, she flies away on her Groomba (A mario version of a roomba, instead of a broom).
Over the course of this chapter, Mario befriends Alkimi, who is secrelty studying alchemy instead of magic, against her father's wishes. She becomes the 2nd partner. They find out through the school's library that Baronus was sealed long ago by ancient magikoopas using the Seven Gems of Order.
Alkimi dosen`t see why it's such a big deal that Baronus is in charge instead of Bowser, until it is revealed that he installed a new headmaster who is going to change everyone's curriculum and force them to only study magical blasts instead of all kinds of studies.
Together, they defeat the headmaster and restore order. The old headmaster thinks it is unusual that Mario is there, but he knows nobody there will care because the students like to be rebellious anyway and many dress like Mario all the time.
About Baronus, he is terrified and warns them that they need to gather the gems and seal him back right away, since he has a hunch that the ancient magikoopas sealed him away for the good of everyone. At his office, there is a magical device that can use one gem to point to the next one, and wishes Mario, Amani and Alkimi well on their quest.
This is what I have so far but the general ideas going in are:
Bowser is well liked in the Koopa kingdom, even if he fails to capture Peach all the time, in all the games everyone seems to generally like working for him.
Baronus is a Koopa of Absolutes and only tolerates absolute victory or failure. He seeks perfection in all things and harshly punishes any and all failure with the same viciousness he uses against his opponents. Throughout the Adventure, during the Bowser segments, Bowser notices his harshness and he is denigrated and berated as well.
Baronus has his own competent subordinates, none of which have ever failed him, who he is able to summon with his magic. They include a Witchy Big Boo, a Shy Guy who enjoys all his work, and a Businesslike Bandit in a suit.
The setting is the Koopa Kingdom, which would be explored more fully than in any other Mario game. As with paper mario tradition, there would be varied and new environments, including Kam University serving as the game's hub and 1st chapter, a bustling underground city (with a theater and a play you act in, Flurrie used to perform there), an underwater blooper village, and a hidden ninja village in a japanese-style forest where Ninji live.
Each of Mario's Partners would go through some charachter development as well, such as Amani realizing there can be much worse than Bowser and that there are all kinds of people in the koopa kingdom. Alkimi would have a tearful moment as her father is turned to stone by Baronus for disobeying him at one point.
Baronus needs the gems of order to fully undo the binding placed on him and restore his full youth and power. He berates Bowser for not knowing this or having them already. There are others, of course, who wanted Baronus to be revived for a different purpose.
I haven't fully developed my ideas for the other partners but I do have a general idea of what I want to do with the story as a whole, using my favorite and IMO best version of Bowser, the lovable, gullible villain who says he is much worse than he is and is more successful when being assertive (SMRPG, SPM, BIS interpretations are my favorite examples, with him being in TTYD like this as well).
Baronus is to be there as the "other" type of Bowser that Nintendo somehow likes to make us think is the same person as the previous one. A maniacal conqueror with little overall to him but brute force as a threat. However, because he is older, Baronus is also more intelligent, though not above being manipulated.
Any thoughts/Comments?
