Wait, for the first time you might be saying?
Well, yes. You see, while I played Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door on Gamecube, I never previously got around to playing the N64 title. I'd seen videos of it. Read articles about the game on Mario Wiki. Seen walkthroughs in magazines and what not. But I'd never actually tried it for myself.
So because of that, I decided to try playing the game for the first time and telling people what I think of it. Here's my original recap here:

As well as the same recap posted here, in case anyone is curious about it:

Chapters 1 and 2
Here's my battle against the Koopa Bros:
And that's where I'm currently up to. Tomorrow, I'll be playing the second Peach interval as well as as much of Forever Forest, Boo's Mansion and Gusty Gulch as possible. Will I do well? Or will the various puzzles and ghosts confuse the hell out of me? Find out tomorrow!

Prologue
Well, that first battle with Bowser was sure something. Nothing quite like that happened in the sequels!
Wait, why is the older Goomba following me around like a partner? Huh,
guess him and the rest of his family (other than Goombario) were also
intended to be playable at one point. And this intro is using what's
left over...
Not a fan of the combat at this point. Seems awkward that you can't use
action commands till you reach Toad Town and meet Twink for the first
time. Preferred how Thousand Year Door just let you use them off the
bat.
So... Tattle is useless then? Guess so, since there's no Tattle Log in
this game. And given you pretty much never refight bosses... yeah.
Huh, don't care much about Goombario and Kooper so far. Probably because
their Thousand Year Door counterparts have literally ten times more
personality (and expanded abilities).
I'm also getting a bit... thrown off by the jump action commands. Why?
Because it says 'press A right before you hit the enemy', yet you
actually have to do it a few seconds before. This is strange if you're
played Mario & Luigi for a long time, where the button has to be
pressed about a quarter of a second before you land on the foe instead.
In Toad Town, I found Merlon's house quite a weird place to enter.
Probably because I'm not really used to having to do the same action
(trying to open the door) multiple times in a row without an indication
of whether it's actually doing anything interesting. That 'talk to
someone a lot' idea isn't really as popular in the newer Mario RPGs.
Remember you had to do something similar to wake up General White in the
sequel though.

First up... did I really not talk about Koopa Village and the Koopa Bros
Fortress here? Weird. Either way, I found that a pretty simple chapter,
though I was wondering why Bombette and the other Bob-ombs never
escaped their cardboard prison. I mean... you can blow up the wall for
gods sake!
The Koopa Bros fight was fun, though pretty easy overall. Shame they only had one flashy looking attack!
Also fought a Blooper in the sewers. Again, nothing much to say here. Pretty much a simple fight for a single battle.
Rugged Trail or whatever it is... that place is annoying. Hated the
letters, cause I didn't fall off the cliff initially and hence didn't
see the letter stuck at the bottom.
Buzzar... he wasn't too bad, though I think the Wii U emulation is just
terrible in this battle. I mean, I was hammering the A button to dodge
certain attacks, and it seems that silly bar never filled up quickly
enough. And hey, the random number god just loved to stick the
'required' to dodge point right at the end of the bar, so I would have
had to nail it perfectly to dodge. Yeah, took way too much damage there.
As for Dry Dry Desert... well, I just went right until I ended up the
Outpost. It's not as confusing an area as I thought it'd be, especially
when I realised that the ruins, outpost and oasis were all in easy to
memorise locations.
I also kind of blew it when getting the advise from that mouse guy, so I
just bought the right items anyway and went to meet the guy I need to
see no problem.
So yeah, onto Dry Dry Ruins now. This place was a bit of a maze, but
honestly it was nowhere near as bad as the walkthroughs made it seem. I
mean, all the guides basically said 'this place is dangerous and
confusing, watch out'. Me? I just strolled through everything, no guide
needed.
Which brought me to Tutankoopa. Again, there were warnings here. At
least one guide said 'OMG you might have your partner knocked out for
the whole fight' and 'watch out for his magic attacks'. Which I guess
was fair advice.
Well, fair if you're one of those people that like taking battles slowly
and strategically. Me? I just went Leeroy Jenkins like on the guy and
blew him to pieces within about a minute. Oh, that Chain Chomp? Screw
him, focus everything on Tutankoopa! Countering? Screw learning that
timing, just focus on doing as much damage as quickly as possible
through Shell Shot and Power Bounce.
Either way, onto the second Peach section now, after which I'll be able to head into Forever Forest.
