This game. Good lord you guys. This game.
They took everything good away from Mario Power Tennis on the Gamecube. When a 3DS game feels bare compared to a 2005 Gamecube game, that's bad. That's really bad.
To start off, the characters no longer play tennis with their own unique style. Mario no longer uses fire-ball moves. Diddy has no jet pack or banana moves. Nope, those were all removed. All powers removed. Now the only difference is speed or power, which existed before.
Next the courts. They took away the gimmick courts. In the Gamecube version, let's say you pick the Luigi's Mansion court. The ghosts will hover around the field and pester you while you play the game. This was so much fun. DK Jungle court had Klaptraps that would chase you around the court. This made each court unique. However, you had the option to turn these gimmicks off if they really bothered you. That's no longer the case in Mario Tennis Open. Now DK has a normal Jungle court surrounded by Toads. No Kremlings. The diversity is gone.
The mini-games are really good, at least. There are only 4, but 1 stands out from the rest. This one mini-game involves you hitting a tennis ball to complete classic levels from Mario Bros. Level 1-1 with a tennis ball. You hit the ball and aim for goombas, or mushrooms, coins and warp pipes! It's awesome! Then 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4. Guiding the ball through the level actually involves some skill.
I know this is not really a review and many of you probably did not even want this game, but don't buy it guys. It is just average. Tournament Mode only lasts so long and the mini-games are too few.
Next up: Bravely Default. I'm expecting so much from the creators of Final Fantasy.
