This game has been the main reason I have been offline. It is just too addicting. This is a must buy for any RPG fan. I have not been this addicted to a 3DS game since Fire Emblem: Awakening. I'll make a few notes and observations for those that want to know more. Don't worry, no spoilers about the story.
1. The game actually allows for great versatility. You can change the difficulty at any time in the menu and you can even change the random battle encounter rate. If you hate random battles in your RPG, then you can turn them off completely. If you love them, like me, you can turn it up all the way and level up very quickly. You can even speed up battles or slow them to a crawl.
2. The job system from the Final Fantasy series returns! You can become a black mage, or a knight. Whatever! You can mix them, or focus on one at a time. Every character can learn them. No character has a fixed job or stat distribution. This adds more freedom to this game and the way you want to battle. Several new jobs were added, like Merchant. I'm currently working on that one. This adds some spice for veterans.
3. The game is full of mood whiplash. Some times the game is happy and funny and then others times, oh boy. This game gets very dark with its themes. However, you'll laugh at other times. Both these conflicted emotions just happened within a small time frame to me just an hour ago. This game will definitely bring out some emotions. I'm still in shock. It feels like a manga or anime.
4. The music is very light and nice to listen too. Many musical themes are repeated. Over and over. However, my favorite theme is also repeated so it is not too bad.
5. World maps return. You travel from place to place on a world map. Airships, boats, the whole deal. No endless hallway nonsense. Exploration is actually rewarded!
6. Sidequests are all over the place. The main story is great, but sidequests appear often. These are often used to earn various jobs and to further sub stories within a chapter. The most difficult parts of the game have come from these quests, but some great plot also came from this. The jobs earned from these quests are not earned in the main story, so these quests will become mandatory for anybody who wants all of them.
Any questions, just ask. I am not even close to beating the game, but I'm pretty sure I have the basics down.
