Today's book is never really included in top 10 lists, but I have always had a strange love for this book. I am talking about my seventh favorite Goosebumps book: Calling All Creeps!
Wow, look at that cover. Monsters all over the place!
This book stars Ricky Beamer. Ricky is always bullied at school (a theme for these books, it seems) and he is getting pretty sick of it. The other kids call him Ricky the Rat and Sicky Ricky all the time. His four main bullies are relentless in their torment of Ricky. Ricky's parents and principal also dismiss him or pay no attention to him or what he says. Basically, it sucks to be Ricky. Through a series of events involving a practical joke Ricky starts getting phone calls in the middle of the night. These phones calls always ask when will the creeps meet. Ricky has no idea what a Creep is and hangs up. He gets a phone call telling him to never hang up again. The next day after school he is ambushed by his bullies and they take Ricky to the forest and reveal their true forms: Creeps! Creeps look exactly like on the cover! Lizard-like creatures with claws. They believe Ricky is their leader because of the previous practical joke. See, the joke was that Ricky told all creeps to call a girl he hates and posted her number in the school paper, but she was the editor of the paper and instead put his number there, so now these aliens think he is calling them to arms to take over Earth! Wow, what a crazy story. So how is this on my Top 10 list? Well, the Creeps want to turn the school kids into Creeps by using Identity Seeds which erase the kid's previous attitudes. Wow, dark. Ricky tries numerous times to sabotage their plans, but eventually the Creeps put the seeds into the cookies at the school's annual Bake Sale. Ricky tries to stop the kids from eating the cookies, but they all start making fun of him. The Creeps tell Ricky that once the kids eat the seeds they will become his slaves, so Ricky starts shilling out cookies for free to the kids! He even eats one himself and transforms into a Creep!
Talk about a dark ending. This whole story we were cheering for Ricky and felt sorry for him. Then he effectively murders all his peers at his school and becomes leader of the Creeps, who will move on to new targets. He is the only protagonist in a Goosebumps book to fall to such a callous level and that makes this book fun to read.
