I'll admit, this is the Mario RPG I'm least familiar with (I have only played it on a crappy emulator), but I've seen several opportunities to bring back Geno, Mallow, and maybe some other characters from the game in other Square-enix developed Mario games (like Mario Sports Mix and Fortune Street), but they keep passing up the opportunity. Since the two companies collaborate on Mario games now, why not also make a sequel to Super Mario RPG? I know Paper Mario was originally that, but it became its own series. Super Mario RPG could very well become its own series, just like the other two RPG series. What are your thoughts on this? Should Nintendo and Square-enix make a sequel to Mario RPG, a spinoff with its characters, or even a remake?
Mallow is perhaps the greatest opportunity to market RPG characters. He fits Nintendo's playful, cuddly image perfectly. He looks like Kirby and I have a feeling he would be very popular among most demographics that Nintendo aims at. He really is a gold mine waiting to be discovered.
Geno was probably the most popular from the game, and remains popular now. He is seen as the fighter type, so he would fit in the Smash Bros. series. Lots of people have suggested that, and I would agree that he would fit right in with the others. He has plenty of attacks and moves already made that could be quite cool and his character can be explored in other ways beyond fighting games.
Actually if I remember correctly I read somewhere that characters from smrpg may return in future (it was in an article about dream team). I would love if they returned, even as a cameo or something
Also like Rainvainz said Mallow fits perfectly to Nintendo's "cute, cuddly" character imago in vein of Kirby for example.
Will we ever see Super Mario RPG characters return, despite the game's huge fanbase? I wouldn't get my hopes up, but at the same time, I'm not opposed to the idea.

Don't you harsh my buzz, bro!
You are the realist of the forum, but I'm so glad you are not opposed to this! I get my hopes up a lot though, even when chances are slim to non-existent. I just really believe in Geno and Mallow! ^_^

I would love for Geno to make a reappearance, but doubt any of the new characters introduced ever will. I remember reading that Nintendo collaborated with someone in the making of SMRPG, and they took ownership of the characters.
Then again, maybe I'm incorrect. I did read that, though.
It was Square. I think they still have the rights. Maybe not, though, but they have been working with Nintendo lately with handheld games, so I don't think the relationship is as sour as it used to be.
As long as square owns them I doubt we will see them again. I'm not really all that upset about that either since I don't care about most of the OCs from SMRPG though it is unfortunate for those who do.

Very unfortunate for us, especially since Mallow and Geno were great.
I just hope Nintendo and Square patch up some differences soon.

I don't think there is bad blood between them, just that square doesn't seem interested in using them, square made mario hoops and Mario sports mix but instead included final fantasy and dragon quest characters.
Yeah, plus, they have made games like Bravely Default for Nintendo systems. That leaves me hopeful that they will be okay with giving up the characters. Probably not, but I hope so.
It was so long ago though, so they might not want to revive these guys.
