So today I bought this game (the 3ds version mind you). I enjoy JRPGs a lot and feel that the Tales of franchise is an energtic rpg franchise. Before ToA I had only played Tales of Vesperia, which simply is one of my favorite games and (prehaps) my favorite JRPG for its fun/serious story, good cast of characters, some heartwarming themes about friendship and quite fun/addictiving battlesystem (not to mentoin sidequests and all other stuff). Because of my fondness with ToV I really wanted to try another game in the franchise. I decided to buy Tales of the abyss because my 3ds collection needs more games as well.
Since I just bought the game I am not that far in it but I will tell some things
The story tells us of two kingdoms that have had war with each other. The main character Luke von Fabre is a future duke. As a child Luke was kidnapped by the other kingdom which left him traumatised. Because of this Lukes parents have decided to keep him at the mansion until he turns 20. One day however a mysterious woman named Tear appears. She accidentaly transports herself and Luke to the neighboor kingdom. I am not so far in the game so I cant say much about the story otherwise
The battkesystem is typical for a tales game. Unlike some other rpgs (such as final fantasy) the combat is rather realtime than standard turnbased RPG (I think the franchise was the pioneers of this). Despite not being so "typical RPGish" I personally like the gamestyle. It is fun and dynamic, yet feels rpgis. It is slightly a shame that the 3ds port of ToA is probably single player, as I loved to play ToV with my cousin :3
The storyline and characters seem promising. There seems to be some kind of huge backstory stuff going on in the games. The story has some fantasy genre/JRPG cliches but so far there isnt anything annoying. I like the characters too both as personalities and to use them in battle. The interaction between Luke and Tear is great (and hilarious)
The graphics are...meh. Graphics werent exactly the strongest points of ToV and definitely not here either. They do not bother me tho and once you play you get used to it. The character designs and anime esque cutscenes are great tho (sadly I dont think we will get that many cutscenes)
