~Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ~Sonic Adventure 2 ~Super Mario Bros. 3
Majora's Mask?
That's a new one. I usually see OOT on a list.
Majora's Mask needs more love, if anything. Although, the new 3DS version may raise some awareness and create some rabid fans.
Super Mario Bros. 3 > World. Too bad they both get more attention than my Mario Bros. 2.
Majora's Mask seemingly gets more love than Ocarina by the fandom nowadays, though it seems people usually praise it for it's "darker and edgier" atmosphere more than anything else. (Even though I feel Twilight Princess handled that a lot better in my honest opinion.)
Majora's Mask had darker themes than Twilight Princess in some ways, but Twilight Princess is the sadder game to me. Midna and the various characters had me more engrossed with the game and setting.
I guess I understand what you are saying, but fans on forums are sometimes a vocal minority. Many of the casual fans do not even know about Majora's Mask, but still know OOT.

I'd hardly call Sonic Adventure 2 overrated nowadays. For starters, people have been complaining about the non-Sonic/Shadow levels for years, along with using this game as a scapegoat for the series' so-called "decline". Plus, people have been saying that the game "hasn't aged well", and pretty much dismissed it as garbage the moment Generations came into the picture. Lastly, a bunch of idiots have even gone so far as to say the only reason anyone could ever like Sonic Adventure 2 better than that game (or in general) is because of nostalgia, and that's one of the stupidest things I've heard out of the Sonic fandom yet, which is really saying a lot. That argument is beyond hypocritical, considering the fact that it's often said by Classic Sonic purists, and Generations, the game which they treat as absolute perfection, consisted of next to nothing but nostalgia.

jesus christ, this quotation box's design is ridiculous.
Anyway, Sonic Adventure 2 is pretty overrated, IMO. As ProJared says, it's a pretty bad game. On the contrary, people keep wanting another Sonic Adventure sequel primarily because of this game. I think it's mainly nostalgia that feeds into it, but it's a pretty vocal aspect of that part. I'm not a Sonic fan, so I could just be making all of this up.
I love Sonic Adventure 2, but I've only played 2 Sonic games. (That and Advance) SA2 is one of my favorite games overall actually.
People were asking for a third Battlefront, and nobody seemed to care when they gave them it. I wouldn't care if they made SA3 or not, either way I can still play my baby...

Super Mario Galaxy. It's a fine game, but it's not best game of all time quality, not by a long shot. Too many dull levels like the Snowcap Galaxy, Beach Bowl Galaxy, Grand Finale Galaxy, etc, and too many underused ideas (like the Red Star powerup).
Sunshine too, though that game is simply... well, decent. Some quesionable game design decisions just really drag it down.
Wario fan, Mario game modder and interested in every Mario RPG you can imagine!
I also run Wario Forums, which is a place to discuss the Wario Land and WarioWare franchises.

I love Sunshine, it's not perfect and I can see that, but why would you call it overrated? I'd call it underrated if anything.
Because as much as a certain subset of Nintendo/Mario fans love the game (usually those who grew up in the Gamecube era), it has a ton of wasted potential, poorly thought out game design decisions and other things.
I mean, literally half the game is collecting stuff. Seriously, we love to say how Donkey Kong 64 and it's ilk are based too much around 'collectathon' gameplay, but honestly? Sunshine probably more than beats either it or Banjo Tooie in how much of the gameplay is collecting shiny trinkets. For example, every level has at least one red coin mission, so that's already 7 red coin shines. But wait, Bianco Hills and Noki Bay have two red coin missions. So that's up to 7 shines. But wait again, every 'secret' area has at least one red coin mission, so that's another 11 red coin shines. So at the moment, 20 of 120 missions are red coin based. But wait, let's add non course levels (another three red coin missions) and Delfino Airstrip (another one). Let's add the 24 shine sprites gained by collecting blue coins. And the 100 coin shines in the 7 areas and hub. That's now a massive 52 shines of 120 that involve collecting money. So that's one thing, the game design seems to be mostly 'explore island and collect stuff', not 'explore island and do interesting things'.
And the annoyances don't stop there. Forcefully removing FLUDD in secret areas. Randomly shoving 'secrets' into obtuse places (like walls you have to spray with water). Making you ride slow boats half way across Delfino Plaza. Yoshi disappearing in water in general. A very, very poor final level with an uninspired boss fight. The fact the game was set on a tropical island, yet hardly any of the levels really used the theme to its full degree (how many beaches did we get?)
It's a good game, but it's not a 'underrated classic' like some people make it out to be.

I agree. Sunshine was good, but not great, and I agree with so many of your viewpoints. I think it's the weakest of the 3D Mario platformers.
I also agree with your viewpoints on Galaxy, but Galaxy is a fine game. Galaxy does have its flaws, but I enjoyed it and Sunshine about equally, but I don't have fond memories of Sunshine. Galaxy is bitter-sweet for me, since it's good, but I feel it's an 8/10 game. Galaxy 2 is by far the most overrated Mario game in the series, though. When other games (like New Super Mario Bros.) blatantly, liberally, and egregiously recycle concepts from the previous games, people rightfully call them out for being uncreative and a cash grab, but Galaxy 2 got a free pass by both critics and other gamers, and it's one of the highest-rated Mario games by Metacritic averages. People say that Galaxy 2 has "amazing graphics" or "expanded and improved on Galaxy" but all it really did is add more levels (with a lot of recycled concepts), more powerups, and worsened the swimming controls. And guess what, this is exactly what rehashes do too, add more items, levels, characters, powerups, etc. without actually improving the core gameplay or capitalizing on the potential of new concepts and designs the first game missed. Galaxy 2 removed the Red Star and Ice Flower and introduced more power-ups that were used in, like, 2 levels, and Galaxy had power-up frequency issues as well. Yoshi adds barely anything to the gameplay as well, since he appears so infrequently, all his power-ups stink, and his voice is pure awful.
Galaxy 2 is a 7/10 rehash, not a 9.5/10 gaming masterpiece.

You forgot about the blue coins hahaa. Yeah maybe the concept of Mario going to vacations and then Bowser and his child fucking up his vacations was "meh :/" but hey, if you analyze...Bowser in Mario Party is also the same: Just being there to be a jerk haha

Blue Coins are awful. There's no indication in any given episode about how many Blue Coins you've collected out of X Blue Coins so it's really hard to keep track if you've collected a particular Blue Coin or not. The motivation reasons for Blue Coins also feel filthy since you have to pay them to get Shine Sprites RIGHT IN THE PLAZA.
I think New Super Mario Bros. Wii was really overrated back in its time. all my Mario friends at high school were all over it. me? I hated Propeller Mario's unwieldy controls and general inferiority to Cape Mario and Raccoon Mario. it was a pathetic excuse for a flying powerup. also, no Mega Mushroom afaik. (which was what made NSMB special IMO. it felt so badass). also, the NSMBDS battle mode was awesome. i played it a lot with my date at the time, it was really timeless, I'd still love it probably. the coin battle mode totally lacked that charm IMO. the hectic-ness of it all. also, Koopalings instead of the creative boss ideas NSMBDS had (Lakithunder, Monty Tank and Mummypokey to name a few.) That said, NSMBWii was a really good, if not great game, it's just not as good as some people think it is.
I also think OOT is overrated. Same for Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess, though less so. That said, neither of them is bad, they're good games, just not "perfect" and all that.
If non-Nintendo games count... Minecraft. Minecraft. MINECRAFT. the kids in high school were almost infatuated with it, i won't be surprised if they married the game, and they were EXTREMELY annoying and the target of my hate for a long time. it was IMPOSSIBLE to hold conversations with them without the game popping up. and some "friends" rather played Minecraft with me than having a Skype conversation with me. I'll stop writing now, in case my anger flares up again. I hate that game so badly.

Also, I'll throw in...Mario 64. I might get shot down really hard for this, but the game never did anything for me at all, and I hate the camera and the controls at times. Maybe this is just because I wasn't there when it was first released to soak in all of the love for a 3D game, but I never really understood why this seems to be like everyone's favorite Mario game.

i do not hate M64 but it's certainly not as great as people say it is either. Maybe because I am a Generation Y kid... I guess. SM64DS improves upon the game a lot, adds lots of new content and 3 new playable characters... why not just play that?
EDIT: I generally dislike the M64's blocky, polygon-ish graphical look. i'd rather have good pixel art than mediocre 3D environments and characters lacking the detail good pixel art can do. if I want 3D, it has to look good.

Yup, now I feel like the DS version was a pretty good "remake", so to speak. Expanding on the game and making it look less, like you said, blocky.

Yeah. :-)
I do admit tho, I sorta cringe when thinking about how well SMW and SMAS-SMB3 aged (basically, not at all. SMAS-SMB2 aged a bit worse IMO, but good nonetheless) and how SM64 aged. I do understand it was great in its time, when 3D was the next "big" thing, and games like Assassin's Creed, Fallout 4, Battlefield etc. were nonexistent. but for a millennial/Generation Y kid like me, who wasn't around at that time (I'm 1997-born. SM64 was 1996. a kid generally becomes self-aware and aware of what's going on around them at, like, age 5-7), it does feel a bit awkward to see those blocky graphics. for pixel art, this isn't a problem; the hardware has a lot less to do, enabling for SMAS-SMB3's rich, warm, deep color palettes for example, and the amount of detail in its backgrounds and level decoration.
Bottomline; while I do think it looked great in its inception, it hasn't stood the test of time so well as SMAS-SMB3 and SMW. it sorta sticks out like a sore thumb. it didn't age so well IMO and that's what ultimately did it in for me.

While I really enjoy them, the N64 Mario Party trilogy also comes to mind. Classic Mario Party purists tend to act like they're perfect games and any Mario Party after 3 is nowhere near as good as the originals despite that clearly not being the case. The Gamecube era Mario parties honestly felt more fun and lively in comparison, especially considering they don't force you to rapidly rotate the control stick while simultaneously burning a hole through your palm just to win a game of tug o' war.

I completely agree!
Mario party 6 is my favorite and did everything MP2 did, but better. MP 4 and 5 tend to be overlooked and they provided some of the greatest mini-games.
MP5 especially had great games: Dodge Bomb, Coney Island, Mario Mechs, Fish Upon a Star. All better than those control stick mini-games.
Out teachers at school actually wondered if we were abused because we had burns on our palms and had trouble holding objects.

Bump, but yes, the older Mario Party games are nowhere near as good as the GCN Mario Parties, with Mario Party 6 being my favorite. For starters, the older ones don't have team battles, and their minigames feel lacking. Not to mention, the older Mario Party games had the crap that relies on innate talent rather than skill such as short-term memorization for a button combo, which I'm terrible at.

Mario Party Advance just lacked a decent multiplayer. Unfortunately, multiplayer is a strong point of Mario Party. Without it, Mario Party Advance isn't really spectacular. I think Mario Party 6 is decently loved here, but I just don't understand why the N64 ones are regarded as the best when they lack content and modes the GCN games offered.
