Super Smash Bros. Melee: I honestly don't get why this game is so special, compared to the other Smash games.
Minecraft: I actually enjoy this game, but I agree it got really popular for such a simple concept.
Dust: An Elysian Tale: I haven't played this game much, but while it's good, I don't see what's so special about it so far. I mean, the graphics are great, but the gameplay seems simply okay so far, and I really am not a fan of the voice acting. Still, I don't hate it, and I may play it more in the future.
Five Nights at Freddy's Series: I'm not sure if I can call these overrated, as I've never played them and a lot of others would now agree with me, but I felt it was worth mentioning. To be honest, the gameplay looks alright in some of these games, but I still don't think the series deserves to be as popular as it got.
Undertale: Now, I really enjoy this game, and it's one of the best indie games, in my opinion. However, there are still many flaws with the game, in my opinion, so I don't feel it's the best game ever, nor the best indie game ever.

I recently started playing Undertale and it does have flaws. The start is kind of bland and slow, for instance. I still have trouble calling indie games overrated, however. The original Five Nights is the closest to being called that for me. I like both games, but I can see how others would see the hype and assume they are overrated.
Would rather go to Waffle Kingdom than this Mushroom crap.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: I honestly don't get why this game is so special, compared to the other Smash games.
Wave-dashing (which adds a layer to combat), fast-paced gameplay that rewards combos and aggressive play, L-canceling (debatable), SHFFL, shines, characters sound funny, CPUs are dumb, Adventure Mode (I guess), air dodging, better use of hitstun and stale move negation, trophy viewing has an unusually unrestricted camera, Mario isn't edgy, a Jigglypuff that doesn't suck.
Some of these reasons are tongue in cheek. Melee also has big balance issues. Kirby and Pichu.
Just curious- how are SMB3, SA2 and the Mother series overrated? i know it doesn't mean hating the game, mind you, and I'm not saying it's not overrated OR underrated, just genuinely curious.
If there are a few I'd consider overrated, it'd be; -UnderTale (i love the game, mind you, but the amount of attention it gets in comparison to lesser-known/possibly actually underrated indie games feels a bit unfair. As an indie dev myself i feel it especially. constantly comparing myself to UT and all that) -Minecraft (i genuinely don't enjoy it; I used to hate it and its fanbase but not so much, but to be fair, the hate might come from the fact that I had friends that considered the game more important than talking to me etc... but apart from that bias, I genuinely don't enjoy how it plays, how "flat" its graphics look without some sort of modded texture pack or shaders, its building mechanics and combat are extremely boring to me (fighting enemies is just a matter of button mashing & having a strong weapon), and for some reason I just can't enjoy the game. At all. And believe me, I tried, but i just couldn't. No hate to anyone who enjoys the game though- except if they start bossing me around and telling me to play it like some of those kids in high-school and the aforementioned friends used to do. Phew, that's a mouthful, pardon me) -Five Nights At Freddy's (this one is biased, I admit, cause I never played it but i just genuinely can't understand its popularity when it came out. Also the dev being misleading in making games AFTER the supposed "The Final Chapter" game if I remember right) -Super Smash Bros. franchise IN GENERAL (not that the games are bad or anything, but... Idk. it gets a lot of popularity and all, and I admit the fact it mainly excludes indies such as Shovel Knight, Shantae and Quote which fans wanted A LOT and to me the Ballot felt rigged (it may be, or it maybe not, it just felt weird how Bayonetta won and coincidentally Bayonetta 2 was on the Wii U, it feels like a marketing move to me) i admit those things darkened my opinion of the franchise) -Pokémon Sun and Moon (i admit it's not out yet, so I'd call it overhyped, but i don't quite understand the hype it gets) -Generation 1 Pokémon games (just putting this in here too. I find the hype Sun and Moon gets a bit overdone but I think Gen1 is overrated as well. i'm not a GenOner/GenWunner/GenWhateverer)
Fun facts 'bout me: -I'm bisexual. -I am a huge Mario fan. Also Kingdom Hearts and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Explorers of Sky. -I am making fangames and original projects: check out Super Mario RPG: The Prism Stone in the Fan Creations forum! -I have Asperger's Syndrome. -I am shy but I am friendly and don't dislike others for no reason.
i do not hate M64 but it's certainly not as great as people say it is either. Maybe because I am a Generation Y kid... I guess. SM64DS improves upon the game a lot, adds lots of new content and 3 new playable characters... why not just play that?
EDIT: I generally dislike the M64's blocky, polygon-ish graphical look. i'd rather have good pixel art than mediocre 3D environments and characters lacking the detail good pixel art can do. if I want 3D, it has to look good.
Yup, now I feel like the DS version was a pretty good "remake", so to speak. Expanding on the game and making it look less, like you said, blocky.
I agree w/ this btw :3
(i apologize for the double post. Its a long time since i used ProBoards and is there any way to merge quotes/stuff into a post that I placed other than copy/paste?)

I don't think there's a multiquote function here, though I could be wrong. Annoying, though.
I admit the fact it mainly excludes indies such as Shovel Knight, Shantae and Quote which fans wanted A LOT and to me the Ballot felt rigged (it may be, or it maybe not, it just felt weird how Bayonetta won and coincidentally Bayonetta 2 was on the Wii U, it feels like a marketing move to me) i admit those things darkened my opinion of the franchise)
None of those three are really viable Smash candidates and probably not as popular as Bayonetta. "I don't like the results so I think they're rigged and they just want to promote Bayonetta 2" sounds a lot like motivated reasoning to me. Not to mention, they already got Corrin for a promo character. Nintendo already had some dabbling in Bayonetta, so I think Bayonetta is actually more qualified than Cloud in terms of Nintendo involvement. Super Smash Bros. is a fantastic franchise; it's hard for me to see any real flaws aside from balancing problems (mainly, what the developers do to their characters) and maybe some weird haphazard changes like addition of blast KOs on the upper blast line and not letting 8-player Smash in every stage.

The most overrated game I can think of at the moment is Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. I do NOT have a positive opinion on that game and it's mediocre at best, suffering from the same issues that made me hate Sticker Star yet many people say it's better than Dream Team. I get that Sticker Star also had gameplay issues (though they didn't bother me as much as the story and characters) but that doesn't mean fixing only those will suddenly make a good game. That's what Paper Jam is: Sticker Star with better gameplay (in the Mario & Luigi style). Even with the better gameplay, it still has a grand total of one returning OC and no new ones.
But the main thing that makes this game such a disappointment is the potential it had. Mario & Luigi, a series that spawned Fawful, the Beanbean folk, the Shroobs, the Brocks, Pi'illos, Antasma, Stuffwell, Popple and more.... colliding with Paper Mario, the series that spawned Vivian, Dimentio, Lord Crump, Kammy Koopa, Count Bleck, Parakarry, and more... and the result is literally just two of every main character but Luigi. None of the aforementioned characters or any other past OCs appear and it's a damn shame.
I will never understand those who praise this mediocrity.

Most Overated Games... ALL OF THE 3D ZELDA GAMES>_< Besides Wind Waker and Majora's Mask all of the 3D Zelda games in my eyes are very boring, and just don't hold my attention for long enough for me to care about them.

Glad to see I am not.the only.one here. I have tried Xelda before and while jit bad I couldnt get into them
Maybe its because I suck at games and got stuck in the first dungeon
As for Paper Jam I disagree. While I do think the game is mediocre I do think it has some redeeming qualities ,mostly in its writing. I especially liked how they handled characters like King Boo or Bowser Jr.

Majora's Mask will, eventually, become the overrated one over OOT. Funny enough. Wind Waker and Majora's Mask have gained so much fame lately and have been praised over entries like Twilight Princess, so I can see them becoming overrated even though I agree that they are among the best entries.
I think half of my SNES collection may be overrated.
