It is the month of Halloween! This is my favorite holiday and as such I absolutely love Halloween cartoons and specials. My favorite is from the series Rocko's Modern Life. The Halloween episode is properly titled Sugar Frosted Frights. I love the episode and recommend you all look it up on Youtube.

The first thing I love about this episode is the Halloween imagery. The witch toiling over the bubbling cauldron while the spooky trees cast shadows over the tombstones in the graveyard is spooky. All of this is illuminated by the moon in the dark sky. This is proper Halloween imagery. No gore, no blood, just spooky and fun images.
The episode revolves around the character Rocko and his friend Heffer and Filburt as they go trick-or-treating. Filburt has never been trick-or-treating before and is scared of the holiday because of his aunt telling him that candy was poison and if he ate any the ghost of the Hopping Hessian would come to get him!

They all dress up with costumes! I love that this episode focuses on the costumes, as that is a major part of Halloween.

Heffer is the yellow one, and Rocko is the one dressed as a superhero.

Filburt is the weird looking ghost. He finally gets his first piece of Halloween candy and eats it.

He becomes crazy over the sugar rush!

One lady offers him pennies instead of candy and he breaks into her house after stepping over her!

Filburt starts to consume all of the lady's sugar in a craze!
Filburt starts to fall under a trance and imagines himself as a winged beast, a reference to a Night On Bald Mountain.

Filburt then hallucinates about eating candy and runs into a cemetery deep in the woods past an old photo hut.

Rocko and Heffer get Filburt under control and begin to leave the woods when they hear something behind them. It is the Hopping Hessian!

The group flees toward the old photo hut and try to cross it, believing the Hessian cannot cross that point, a reference to the Headless Horseman. The Hessian appears and attacks them with his severed leg, sending the guys sprawling into the nearby creek.

The scene then shifts to one year later on Halloween and Filburt is excited! He heads over to Rocko's house to get ready to trick-or-treat and find the group looking at pictures on a projector from the previous Halloween, but with a special guest: The Hopping Hessian!

Turns out everyone is fine and the Hessian is a good guy. They all laugh over the encounter from last year and then prepare to go trick-or-treating once more while the Hessian heads to haunt the woods once more.
The episode ends on a scary note when Filburt asks who took all those pictures for the projector, shocking and scaring everyone, including the Hopping Hessian!
This episode points out the best points of Halloween. The candy, the costumes, and the spooky imagery. The episode has great music, ghost stories and all that I could ever ask for in a Halloween episode.
