Well, the time has come! Spoilers below, obviously. I would like to know if Dream Team(DT) surpassed the previous game(BIS) in the series, in your opinion. I've been debating this since I beat Dream Team. I'm just not sure. Let's look at some of the points in comparable areas:
1.Population:
Dream Team obviously has the more active world. NPC characters roam the whole map in Dream Team. Mushrise Park
and Wakeport are especially crowded. I liked this! I always want more characters roaming around. Bowser's Inside Story did not have this. The only populated area in that game was Toad Town. Yet, Toad Town felt very alive. I loved playing hide and seek with that toad child and visiting the clinic in order to talk to Blorbed toads. The shopping mall and Mushroom Ball Derby also added a fun feeling to Toad Town. I loved finding all of the balls and turning them in for prizes. I think I might have to give this category to DT, though. Wakeport also felt very alive while also acting as a main cameo and activity center. You can do puzzles with Kylie Koopa, take part in the Mad Skill-a-thon with Skillet or take part in a trading sidequest to marry a couple. Winner: DT
2. Humor:
Both games have a tons of humor. DT has the Massif Bros. and their beef. BIS has Fawful and his lack of beef. The characters in DT all have funny comments and quips to make whenever something happens. Brickle is hilarious with his machine that goes ON DA FRITZ! Britta scares all of her workers and they can't even go past 1 day without an incident. All of this was funny, but I felt BIS had humor more suited to my tastes. I love to read Fawful's various comments. He is always very funny. Midbus also has speech quirks, as well as Dr. Toadley and Birdley. I enjoy stuff like that. Bowser was also funnier in this game. I like it more when Bowser is in a comedy role. His search for the Banzai Bill was especially funny. Wiggler Family Farms, Nutsoglobin, Fawful Theater,etc.. The game is loaded with humor that does not take itself seriously. Winner: BIS
3. Locations:
I felt that both games had some unique locations. DT had Somnom Woods, which is easily the most beautiful location in the series. I felt like this place was so Mysterious. BIS had Dimble Woods, which has a more cartoony feel, which I usually prefer, but not in this case. BIS shined mostly at the end, as Peach's Castle was an awesome final area. Neo Bowser Castle from DT was boring by comparison. Other than that, none of the areas from BIS really involved huge story arcs like the world from DT. Bowser mostly just traveled from area to area. I liked how DT always had a huge goal in each area and new characters to meet in each. Winner: DT
4. Characters:
Oh boy. The category everybody has waited for. Both games had the Mario Bros. and Starlow, Peach, Bowser, and Toadsworth.
BIS, as stated, had my favorite version of Bowser. DT brought back so many characters to make cameos, such as Popple. However, I mostly look forward to the villains in these games. Brickle, Britta, Massif Bros. and Dreambert were all cool, but they were not villains. Antasma was the main villain, along with Bowser. Yet, these two simply do not appear very often. We rarely see the other side of the characters. We see tons of good guys, but no baddies. BIS gave us both sides. Fawful and Midbus were all over that game. Their interactions and involvement in the story wins this category for BIS. Winner: BIS
5. Dream vs Body:
BIS explored the physical characteristics of Bowser's body in a humorous way. DT explored Luigi's mind in a similar way. Basically, this boils down to medical vs psychological properties. Did you enjoy seeing the various mechanisms in Bowser's body? Or did you enjoy the things going on in Luigi's head? I liked the various dream interactions, such as zero gravity, but I also liked Bowser's Pump Works. BIS did rely too heavily on minigames, while DT seemed more natural. Plus, we got to see another side to Luigi in Dream's Deep. I'm not sure on this category, though. As a psychology major, I expected to like DT more, but areas like the Airway in Bowser were so much fun. This category ends with a tie. Winner: TIE
6. Powers and Mechanics:
As previously stated, BIS relied too heavily on some minigames. I also did not like the mic use in BIS. DT has more glaring problems, though. The giant battles were more fun, but felt too scripted and the gyro controls were annoying. The Bros. moves and Luigi attacks also suffered from these problems. I missed BIS attacks like Snack Basket and Magic Windows, or the Jump Helmets. Those were all more fun that the Bros. moves in DT. Luigi's dreamy attacks were nothing special and came off as a chore. Compare that to Bowser's attacks with his Magikoopa squad, or his Koopas and Shyguys! Even Broggy got some action! I loved using those moves. Winner: BIS
There you have it. BIS barely wins this for me. I can play this game over and over and have fun.
