Now that I have played both Pokemon X and Alpha Sapphire I can compare them to see how they stack up to one another!
Graphics:
Alpha Sapphire - The graphics have been updated to compete with X and the water graphics look pristine. I find some of the graphics washed out in some locations, however. The character models and battle models all look fantastic! Alpha Sapphire remains one of the strongest Pokemon games in terms of graphics.
X - This game has the best graphics of any Pokemon game to date. The colors always maintain a vivid flair and the ocean looks better than ever. The weather conditions such as rain and snow makes this game shine and really adds to the atmosphere. This game also boasts superb character and battle models.
Winner: X
Music:
Alpha Sapphire - The music in this game is catchy and upbeat. I find myself humming themes from this game over and over again even when I am now playing the game. Some of the late game themes and post game themes are very touching.
X - The music in X is once again the best in any Pokemon game. I found even small themes, such as the connecting chambers between routes to be memorable. The towns all have distinct themes that fit the character of the town and the Champion’s theme is my favorite of any Pokemon game I have played. This game has less catchy tunes, but more emotional and atmospheric music, overall.
Winner: X
Variety of Pokemon:
Alpha Sapphire -This game focused on the Hoenn region. There is a huge selection of Pokemon early on to make a unique team even before the first gym. I am not including post game Pokemon into this category.
X - This game boasts an even larger array of Pokemon from all regions. The Kalos region is a little lacking in new Pokemon, but the sheer number variety throughout the game makes up for that fact. Dragons even appear early on so that you can train them.
Winner: X
Evil Team:
Alpha Sapphire - Team Aqua is the evil team to fight in this game. They have a cool leader and a few memorable commanders. The grunts all have cool costumes and use some cool Pokemon to battle, such as Sharpedo! I love this team! They also learn from the error of their ways and grow as characters.
X - Team Flare is the team in this game. They look horrible and do not have a fun reason to even obey their leader. Most of the grunts look like crap and none of the commanders are memorable. Their leader is obviously bad from the first time you see him even though his reveal as the leader is supposed to be shocking. They do use a great variety of Pokemon, so I love that aspect.
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Gyms:
Alpha Sapphire - The gyms are pretty good, but nothing special. Some are so straight forward and other have tiny puzzles. I did not care for too many of the gyms, overall.
X - Best gyms in the series to me. The gyms all had a unique appeal, whether navigating a giant spider web in the Bug Gym or swinging on vines in the Grass Gym.
Winner: X
Gym Leaders:
Alpha Sapphire - I loved these gym leaders! The Psychic dual battle sisters were awesome and the final gym leader actually has an impact on the story. Wattson was even a challenge because of his electric status effects and sturdy abilities. Some leaders use more than two or three Pokemon, which is great! Sadly, some were duplicates or same evolution chain.
X - I also love these gym leaders! ^_^ The first Fairy leader is introduced. One of the gym leaders is also important to the story and introduced Mega Evolution. This game also has my favorite Rock gym with the leader using fossil Pokemon. Sadly, they all use two or three Pokemon.
Winner: TIE
Side Characters:
Alpha Sapphire - This game lacked memorable side characters during the main game. I honestly cannot remember many and I just beat the game not too long ago!
X - The main character has a group of friends that travel to the various towns with the player. They appear at certain times to battle the player or compare Pokedex entries. They all have their various reasons for traveling, like memories, becoming a dancer and learning moves, or completing the Pokedex. I love them!
Winner: X
Rival:
Alpha Sapphire - This rival, named Wally, is fun to battle and he is interesting in the fact that you help him catch his first Pokemon. He becomes inspired by the player and wants to become stronger. However, he only appears a few times. He does have the greatest final battle of any rival at the end of Victory Road. Wally experiences great growth as a character.
X- This rival is your neighbor. Her name is Serena and she appears much more than Wally. She battles the player on multiple occasions, but whines sometimes when losing. She also helps the player in double battles many times and has a great team. She experiences good growth as a character.
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Elite Four:
Alpha Sapphire - I love all of them! The Dark and Ghost trainers are fantastic. The Ice trainer is actually strong and uses some of my favorites. The Dragon trainer is one of the coolest. I love the variety in trainers and having a Dark type trainer is so cool.
X - I love three of them, but two of the trainer are Fire and Water types, which is a little underwhelming. The Dragon trainer is unique and she has a good team. The highlight is the Steel trainer, who is actually hard for me!
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Champion:
Alpha Sapphire - The champion is featured throughout the story and uses a great team. He is prominent in the post game too! He is a great trainer and even the other gym leaders talk about him. He actually helps to stop the evil team.
X - She appears twice before her battle. She has no impact on the story and does nothing to stop the evil team. Her team is cool, but she uses the same fossil Pokemon as the Rock gym leader, but in their evolved forms. She has the best Champion theme in the series, but that is not enough to save her.
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Post Game
Alpha Sapphire - Great post game ever! You get multiple starters, a whole side quest involving a meteor and Rayquaza, and each of the Elite Four become stronger with 6 Pokemon teams and Mega Evolution. Oh, and this game has over 30 Legendary Pokemon. Battle Maison also returns to allow players to fight against the CPU in multiple battle formats.
X - Fans and critics alike have panned this game for its pathetic post game. Their is one side story and not much else other than the Battle Maison.
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Towns:
Alpha Sapphire - Lots of great towns in this game! One even floats on the water. ^_^ I loved every town in this game for one reason or another and I love that they had huge towns without making them too crowded or messing up the camera
X - This game had the most memorable towns for me. However, the main city is so large and the camera is clunky in that one town. However, each town has personality and stick out in my mind. I loved the various themes for towns, such as stones in Geosenge Town, or Ambrette Town and its love for fossil Pokemon, or Anistar City and its beauty.
Winner: X
Legendary Pokemon:
Alpha Sapphire - This game has the Hoenn Legendary Pokemon and both factor into the story with the evil team. I like using Kyogre and this game adds Primal versions of the already powerful Pokemon
X - One represents life and the other destruction. The story has a little to do with them, but it all feels anticlimactic with Team Flare. A Fairy Legendary is awesome though!
Winner: Alpha Sapphire
Results:
X - 6 wins
Alpha Sapphire - 6 wins
The winner is based off of whatever categories you find important. X features the best character, gyms, music and graphics, but Alpha Sapphire has the best post game and opposing team.
I think Alpha Sapphire wins, slightly. The fine details might not be as strong, but the meat of the game is there, especially with the post game and a better Battle Maison. Plus, Infernape! ^_^
