Today is a true classic. Many fans of the Goosebumps books list today's entry as their all time favorite in the series. I am talking about The Haunted Mask!

This story involves Carly Beth Caldwell as she prepares for Halloween. See, Carly Beth is often teased by her friends because she is easily scared. She decides to find a scary mask at a local Halloween store in order to get revenge by scaring her friends. She travels to the store and the owner tells her to hurry up and find a mask. Carly Beth stumbles across a back room in the store with some very realistic masks. They look so real, so scary, and they are warm to the touch. The store owner tells her that the masks are off limits, but Carly Beth takes one anyway. Big mistake! The mask is, of course, haunted. Carly Beth wears it on Halloween, but finds it impossible to take off as the mask has fused with her own face. Even worse, the mask changes her sweet personality into that of a cruel monster. She finally gets the mask off with a symbol of love from her mother. The nightmare appears over, but then her brother puts on the mask at the very end!
I loved this entry mostly because it happened on Halloween. A few of the stories take place on Halloween, but this one really captured the true meaning of the holiday with candy, scares, and costumes. Have any of you ever actually put on one of those old leather masks? They are always hot, smell like leather, and become very sticky with sweat by the end of the night. I once wore one for Halloween and had trouble taking it off at the end of the night because it was so hot that I ended up sweating and the leather got stuck! This book captures that feeling perfectly.
