I actually wonder, was Smithy really a bad person? My question may be stupid but... is Smithy really a psychopath?
Smithy made an organization to conquer the world, it seems like your typical villain but.. before the battle, he asks "Hurrumph! Better yet... Why don't YOU give me YOUR stars. Why, then I could easily coquer this world! Then we could get rid of all wishes, and create a world filled with...WEAPONS!!" He seems more mentally delusional and enraged than exactly "evil". It's as if he can't control his disorder, he also seems to have anger issues. Maybe thats why everyone from the Smithy Gang was a follower, to gain power from him.
I don't know, I might be incredibly wrong about this. The thing is... I kinda felt sad when Smithy died and you saw his head on the ground. It was sorta tragic...
The nature of a weapon is psychopathic in itself. He sets out to destroy lives with no care for their feelings, thoughts, or dreams. He was in control and knew what he was doing. Compare him to a more benign antagonist like Booster. Booster was mentally unstable and did not know much about what was going on. He was placed in the game to show us that some antagonists do not act of malice. Smithy, on the other hand, has nothing but malice. It is his nature.
1. No empathy 2. Is charismatic 3. Manipulates others 4. Grandiose sense of self
He has the markings of a psychopath. They can still be tragic, but he cannot be redeemed.

Good analysis. cm made a topic about this kind of stuff too though (but Mario villains in general), maybe merging it is an option? I personally think this is an interesting topic
